Aikibuki (Aiki-weapons)
|

|
Our weekly class of aikibuki uses the traditional Japanese weapons of the bokken (wooden sword) and jo (wooden staff). This training is not based in the use of these weapons to kill or injure (kenjutsu and jojutsu), but in exploring aikido principles. One's study of aikibuki informs and enhances one's unarmed aikido.
Tandoku Kata (solo forms)
These forms (using a jo or a bokken) allow one to study fundamentals of movement and balance and coordinating oneself with a weapon.
Sotai Kata (paired forms)
These exercises and techniques allow one to examine aspects like targeting, distance, and timing when working with a partner. Some forms have only one person with a weapon, while others have both partners using weapons.
- Tachidori - sword disarms
- Jodori - staff disarms
- Jo no tsukai - using the jo to throw or control an attacker
- Tachi tai tachi - sword against sword
If one is interested in a more in-depth training with classical Japanese weapons (i.e. kenjutsu and jojutsu), outside the context of aikido, please contact us for more information.
